The Downtown

Ok, so here it is the Downtown of LA. The most fascinating part of the city, although some of you (looking at these photographs) might ask why? Well, I must admit, we don't have many touristy photos from LA as we didn't feel like taking any in places like Beverly Hills or at plasticky Sunset Boulevard with Burger King, McDonald's and Madame Tussaud. We couldn't believe when we saw the Kodak Theatre, it's just a mall with big car park where once a year they spread red carpet...

But the Downtown was real. It was dirty, complex, diverse in a way that on one street you had run down historic hotels (with 'interesting' tenants), cheap strip clubs, posh restaurants and yet another 'starchitect's' civic building, all in one place!
A lot of people, local, didn't even speak English, it's good to know Spanish there.
I must admit, there were moments when we were a bit scared, an average of one homeless person on every corner... we also saw a guy in Aston Martin there. We thought he was some producer who was looking for another film location perhaps?
Incredible place, if I may say so, no wonder it was a backdrop for many films, like our beloved Heat.
I'm actually listening to this while writing this, gets me in the mood ;)
Now, being in LA, we can kind of understand films like Crash or Falling Down...

OK, wiec oto jest, Downtown LA.
Najbardziej fascynujaca czesc miasta, chociaz niektorzy z Was moga (po obejrzeniu tych zdjec) zapytac dlaczego? No coz, musimy przyznac, ze nie mamy zbyt wielu turystycznych zdjec z tego miasta, no bo nie chcialo nam sie zbytnio dokumentowac Beverly Hills, albo plastikowego Sunset Boulevard z Burger Kingiem, McDonald's i Madame Tussaud. Nie moglismy uwierzyc widzac Kodak Theatre, ktory byl tak naprawde wielkim domem towarowym, gdzie co roku rozposcieraja czerwony dywan...
Za to Downtown bylo prawdziwe. Bylo brudne i bardzo zlozone, chociazby w takim sensie, ze na jednej ulicy byly na przyklad historyczne, zaniedbane hotele (z 'intrygujacymi' rezydentami), tanie kluby striptizerskie, drogie restauracje i kolejny budynek publiczny, zaporjektowany przez znane biuro architektoniczne, wszystko w jednym miejscu!
Wielu ludzi, miejscowych, nie mowilo nawet po angielsku, hiszpanski jest tam bardzo pomocny.
Musimy przyznac, ze byly momenty kiedy to czulismy sie dosc niepewnie, srednio jeden bezdomny na kazdym rogu... ale widzielismy tam tez pana w Astonie Martinie. Pomyslelismy, ze moze jest jakims producentem, szukajacym lokalizacji do filmu?
Niesamowite miejsce (nie wiem czy to slowo jest tu najlepsze..), dlatego tez bylo tlem dla wielu filmow, jak na przyklad uwielbiana przez nas "Goraczka". Wlasnie piszac to slucham tego, wprowadza mnie w odpowiedni nastroj ;)
Teraz, bedac juz w LA, rozumiemy lepiej filmy takie jak "Crash", czy tez "Upadek"...

Archi Tour - LA

exploring Downtown we saw a couple of famous buildings, of course..
Gehry's Walt Disney's Concert Hall with Red Cat gallery and Moneo's Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral.
Gerhy was not surprising at all as if you've seen one you've seen them all ;) although it had some good quality public but secluded spaces around it.
but Moneo's cathedral was amazing, so simple yet so grand, in spiritual way! no unnecessary detail, ornament and religious symbols limited to minimum. just spiritual space captured with light... this is how churches should be designed!

odkrywajac Downtown oczywiscie musielismy zobaczyc kilka znanych budynkow..
Filharmonie Walta Disneya z Galeria Red Cat Franka Gehry'ego i katedre Matki Bozej Anielskiej Rafaela Moneo.
Gehry nie zaskoczyl, gdyz, "jesli widzialo sie jednego, widzialo sie ich wszystkich", ale budynek byl otoczony urokliwymi, intymnymi przestrzeniami publicznymi.

za to Moneo zachwycil nas niesamowicie! prosta bryla, z niesamowita, duchowa atmosfera! zadnego, zbednego detalu, ornamentu i religijne symbole ograniczone do minimum. jedynie nasycona duchowoscia przestrzen. tak powinno sie projektowac koscioly!

Standard Downtown LA

this is where we stayed in LA.
I'm quite surprised that we took so little photos of this place as it was really funky! you can see more on the web site.
nice place and in the end interesting location - the Downtown that was used as set for many, many hollywood films (more on that in next posts).
definitely one of the biggest attractions was the rooftop pool with parties there every night! they asked me there once if I'm 21! come on! ;)
every night we would come (after walking or driving all day) to the roof and look at the views or start our day with a swim there, it was great!
we had lovely honeymoon time there :)
ps. should you ever watch Heat, the bank job shootout scene, listen to one of the LAPD officers ordering to close Flower Street; this is where we stayed!

tutaj sie zatrzymalismy, bedac w LA.
jestem zaskoczona, ze zrobilismy tam tak malo zdjec, bo bylo to naprawde super miejsce! mozecie zobaczyc wiecej na na ich stronie.
naprawde fajne miejsce w ciekawej, jak sie okazalo, lokalizacji - Downtown, ktore bylo wykorzystane w licznych hollywoodzkich filmach (wiecej o tym w nastepnych postach).
zdecydowanie, jedna z najwiekszych atrakcji tego miejsca byl basen na dachu, z imprezami kazdego wieczora! raz nawet zostalam zapytana czy mam powyzej 21 lat!! no jak to tak?! :)
kazdego wieczora (po wyczerpujacym jednak zwiedzaniu) chodzilismy wlasnie na dach i podziwialismy widoki miasta, albo zaczynalismy tam dzien, kilkoma dlugosciami w basenie na poczatek dnia. bylo super!
spedzilismy tam piekny czas, miodowy :)
ps. jesli bedziecie kiedys ogladac "Goraczke", zwroccie uwage, jak w scenie strzelaniny po napadzie na bank, jeden z policjantow kaze zamknac Flower Street; na tej wlasnie ulicy byl nasz hotel!

Venice Beach ☼

First night we got to LA we were exhausted and with few hours left in the day we just walked around Downtown where we were staying. But the next day, the first day of our honeymoon we obviously went to the beach and not just any beach but Santa Monica and Venice Beach (after one hour of looking for the right bus and another hour of the bus ride). The Pacific was great but only Maciej had enough courage in our combo to jump in and have a swim ;) 

After a long walk along the shore, admiring the views we headed for the promenade that was full with bizarre people selling all sorts of weird stuff. 

Venice canals with picturesque bridges and quirky houses, all completely different were great! Flooded with sun got us in the holiday mood :)

What was lovely to see is how people there use the outside space, how there are so many facilities for them to use it like we use our gyms or private gardens.

Intense place, so different to what we know, even other holiday experiences.
Of course, we had french fires for lunch, in paper box. As they say, when in Rome do as... ;)

Pierwszego dnia, po przylocie do LA, bylismy bardzo zmeczeni i majac juz tylko popoludnie do dyspozycji pokrecilismy sie tylko po Downtown, gdzie byl nasz hotel. Ale nastepnego dnia, pierwszego dnia naszej podrozy, coz moglismy robic - oczywiscie poszlismy na plaze (po godzinie poszukiwan wlasciwego autobusu miejskiego i kolejnej godzinie podrozy). Nie byla to jednak zwykla plaza, ale Santa Monica i Venice Beach.

Pacyfik byl niesmowity, ale tylko Maciej mial wystarczajaco duzo odwagi, zeby sie w nim plawic ;) 

Po dlugim spacerze wzdluz wybrzeza, poszlismy w kierunku promenady, pelnej dziwnych ludzi sprzedajacych dziwaczne rzeczy.

Kanaly Venice ze slicznymi mostami i malowniczymi domami (kazdy byl zupelnie inny) byly sliczne, zalane sloncem wprowadzily nas w wakacyjny klimat :)

Najciekawsza byla obserwacja jak ludzie korzystaja z przestrzeni zewnetrznych/publicznych, uzywajac ich jak silowni czy prywatnych ogrodow.

Ciekawe miejsce, ale zupelnie inne niz jakiekolwiek inne wakacyjne plaze…
Oczywiscie jedlismy frytki na lunch, w papierowym pudelku. Jak mowia, jesli wszedles miedzy wrony... ;)
